Equal Opportunities Bike Initiative

On behalf of Free Lakeside and the Worcester Earn A Bike Program, we would like to announce the “Equal Opportunities Bike Initiative.” The families of Lakeside Apartments are members of the most underserved communities in Worcester. Children at Lakeside ride around on bicycle skeletons without seats, propper handlebars, and often several sizes too big or too small. This initiative will provide free bicycles and safety helmets, along with education on bicycle safety, and hands-on repair training for both children and adults at Lakeside Apartments. The Earn-A-Bike mobile shop will also visit the Lakeside community to work on bicycles in need of repairs with youth and adult volunteers from within this community. In addition to providing free bikes, we want to provide agency to youth and adults in this process so they will learn how to repair bicycles for themselves, and encourage them to help younger children fix their bikes after the program expires. Exercise is crucial to the physical and mental growth of children, and this program will assist in building a sense of community and pride while providing a safe form of exercise and recreation. The children at the Lakeside Apartments are forgotten, and there are no resources or opportunities within their local environment for exercise, or transportation to-and-from after school programs. Local after-school programs do not provide transportation. A bicycle may benefit these children with exercise and reliable transportation to-and-from school and after school programs each day.
